"Those Pretty Blues"

Jeff:""Those Pretty Blues" was one of about 6-8 songs on our third cassette, crusty that were developed over time in our live shows. This method was new for us; our previous recordings evolved in the studio and were then re-learned for live performances. I think the difference really shows — most of the arrangements on crusty are tight, and Matt and I play with a renewed confidence and enthusiasm.

"This recording was taken from a 3rd generation copy of crusty, which I thought sounded good enough to share here. We’re currently trying to locate the 1st gen masters so we can make more of our catalog available online.”

Matt:"This was a 4-track cassette recording. To me, that is the most impressive aspect of this (and all of our early recordings). Each track needed to be a perfect take for both of us at the same time…kinda nerve racking really. Good thing we had young nerves at the time."

Cheap Trick Tribute update: We’ve got most of the instrumental tracks recorded for “Voices”, including a new ending that might surprise you! We hope you like it at least. It’s quite a trip, and a bit surreal, to be recording a song that we heard on the radio as kids (right around the time most of us met in school, actually). It’s also a heckuva challenge to try to create something special that isn’t just a copy of the original, while still keeping elements that made the song so special in the first place!

Jeff: “In 1988 I had the cool opportunity to attend a pre-release listening party for Cheap Trick’s Lap of Luxury LP. Rick and Robin were both there, mingling and schmoozing with radio & retail folks (I was working for a growing local record store chain at the time). Each attendee was given a promo 12” single of “The Flame” (a song that would become Cheap Trick’s biggest hit), along with this pin (pictured, above), which has been fastened to my bass strap ever since.”

Working out sounds for our upcoming recording of “Voices” (yes those are the lyrics taped up in front of the mic. The last section of the song has lots of stuff going on!).
